PebbleGo Research
First grade students were introduced to PebbleGo in Library Media class so that they could research animals. After researching a favorite animal, students used the information they learned to make ChatterKids videos. ChatterKids is a fun app that allows students to make their animals talk, using their voice! Super fun and engaging and a great way to share what we learned. Students are also learning about projecting our voice, and practicing what we want to say before we record. Next, we will be using PebbleGo for Black History Month biography research and to learn about planets.
Digital Citizenship
We are using the Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship curriculum to teach digital citizenship and online safety. Click on the image below to learn more.

Creation AppsCHATTERKIDS App
Students created book recommendations for their classmates.
DRAW & TELL App
We read some math stories, then created our own addition and subtraction story problems using Draw and Tell app.
We also used an old favorite, Geoboard app, to practice spelling our name and sight words. Home row HandsStudents are using Keyboarding Without Tears to learn touch typing. Here is a reminder image of our home row fingers!
Computer skillsStudents have been practicing their computer skills. It is important for students to learn how to effectively use the mouse. So, students practice their mouse skills: left-click and drag and drop.

FriendshipSnowmen funRating websitesAs part of our Digital Citizenship and Online Safety unit, we are using Common Sense Media's curriculum to learn about these important topics. In the "Sites I Like" lesson, we talked about websites that are just right for us (Green = Go) and what we like about them (rating - content/purpose, links, activities).
"Our Bot" classroom ebooksiPad Rules & Doodle BUddyAfter learning more about the Parkway iPad Rules, first grade students got a little practice with an old favorite App called DoodleBuddy.
First, we read Dr. Seuss's "My Many Colored Days" and then chose one color that for our mood and drew a picture. Next, we read "Boy + Bot" by Ame Dyckeman. Then, we drew our own robot friend, added our name and saved our creations from DoodleBuddy to the iPad's camera roll. |
Welcome back |
just-right books |
Welcome back to the PW Library first graders! In 1st grade, students will be checking out two books each week. One of these books will likely be a READER, or short chapter book.
This week we talked about JUST-RIGHT books. Using the 5-finger rule, students can determine if the book that they are looking at is too-easy, too-hard, or JUST RIGHT. |

Getting ready for Open House
April is POETRY Month
Color Poetry
We read Karma Wilson & Jane Chapman's "Bear Sees Colors" book and like Bear, the students were inspired to find their own colors in the Library! Students used the Camera app on the iPads to capture five images with the color of their choice; looking to visually finish the sentence starter of "Blue as..." (inserting their own color word for Blue). Then, using PicKids app, they pulled the picture poem together and shared their lovely creations with Padlet. Take a look....these poems are easy on the eyes!
Visualization with Jack Prelutsky's "My Neighbor's Dog is Purple" poem.
Students are working on visualization! You know, that mental image your brain forms as you listen to a poem read aloud. We used Jack Prelutsky's "My Neighbor's Dog is Purple" poem to create mental images throughout the reading of the poem. Students captured their mental image after the first four lines of the poem (Part 1) and again, at the end of the poem (Part 2). Silly, wacky and just plain old awesome fun.

We have OPINIONS too!
Students are working on opinion writing in their classrooms as part of Writer's Workshop. So, we got a bit of practice sharing our opinions about a favorite book. We used PicKids app to create these awesome backgrounds, then used green screen (DoInk app) to insert our tiny selves into the picture and our wonderful voices to tell you our opinion about our book.

Monsters, oh my!We read "Go Away Big Green Monster" by Ed Emberley and listen to "I Need My Monster" by Amanda Noll (read by Rita Moreno), from Storyline Online. This gave students some good ideas for how to design their own monster. Students used a graphic organizer to plan their monster, adding descriptive words to define each body part. Next week, students will create and share their monsters!

ChatterBooksStudents used the ChatterKids app to help recommend their book of choice. Students shared their ChatterBooks in their classroom Seesaw account, so that all their classmates can listen to one another's book recommendations to find their next great read!

KeyboardingKeyboarding Without Tears is the program that the district has purchased for helping to teach students pre-keyboarding and keyboarding skills.
Dot. by: Randi ZuckerbergDot knows ALL about electronic devices....how to tap, swipe and share. However, one day, sets out on an actual interactive adventure in the world surrounding her. Here, tap, swipe and share take on new meaning.
Holiday Tree (video with Dot) International DOT DayWe celebrated International Dot Day in Library Media. The first grade classes read and discussed "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. We also got to make our marks and share them with the Seesaw iPad App. Students took their DOTS home and can show you their creations, as well as retell the story of Vashti and her dot.
Wisconsin Golden Archer NomineesDid you know that Wisconsin has it's very own book award? Did you also know that all Wisconsin students can help pick the winner?
We will be reading each of the five nominated books and voting for our favorite. Seesaw AppStudents used the Seesaw app to share their DOT creations. Seesaw is a digital portfolio tool that will be used in classrooms throughout Parkway this year. We 'practiced' using this app in Library Media and discussed how to take a good picture (centered, not too close/not too far, in focus, following directions).
We also reviewed the Parkway iPad Rules (licensed from Teachers Pay Teachers for all PW teachers). |
Seesaw LabelsStudents used PebbleGo to research an animal, recording important facts on their graphic organizer. Then, they used the labels tool in Seesaw to label parts of their animal. Finally, they recorded some cool facts about their animal before saving their project in Seesaw so that they could share their newfound information with their classmates.
Pic Kids appWe read "I Like Me" by Karen Beaumont and then created a list of words that described ME. What is your favorite food? What are you good at? How would friends describe you? Then, using the awesome app Pic Kids, students added their beautiful faces and all the wonderful words that describe themselves to create a multimedia representation of themselves. See Seesaw for their creation! Below are some samples.
"All About Me" (Pic Kids & Seesaw)Doreen Cronin BooksVery silly story about barnyard animals that type their 'demands' to the farmer. The story has some silly problems and even sillier solutions.
Test your comprehension of the story with this PBSKids game. To celebrate our chance to vote for our favorite Wisconsin Golden Archer nominee, we read Doreen Cronin's "Duck for President" in Library this week. The students enjoyed the silly repetition and Duck's struggle to find a job that is just right for him. Students worked on retelling the story by focusing on events that happened in the beginning, the middle and the end of the story.
Then, we loaded our graphic organizers to Seesaw and added our voice to show our learning about beginning, middle and end. |
What are you reading now?
First grade students are sharing out the books they are reading now, by posting a Parkway Shelfie!
The wall below contains last year's 3rd graders' shelfies to show the firsties how it's done.

Our Library RULES!
We discussed how to take care of our library books and how we should find a safe place at home to keep our books. As honorary members of the Library Secret Service (LSS), students created their own favorite rule for caring for the Parkway Library books.
